Smart Contract Risks: How to Evaluate a DeFi Project's Safety

July 11, 2026 3 min read

Smart contracts are trustless code — but code can have bugs. Before depositing funds into any DeFi protocol, evaluate these factors.

What Can Go Wrong

RiskExampleDamage
Reentrancy attackThe DAO hack (2016)$60M
Flash loan attackMultiple DeFi hacks$10-100M
Logic bugIncorrect calculationFunds stuck or stolen
BackdoorAdmin can drain fundsTotal loss
Oracle manipulationPrice feed manipulatedLiquidation
Rug pullDevelopers remove liquidityTotal loss

Audit Checklist

1. Who Audited?

AuditorReputation
Trail of BitsTop tier
OpenZeppelinTop tier
CertikGood (but not perfect)
HackenGood
SlowMistGood
No auditRed flag — don’t use

One audit is good. Multiple audits from different firms is better.

2. Check the Audit Report

What to Look ForWhat It Means
Critical issues: 0Minimum requirement
Major issues: 0Should be fixed
Minor/info issues: SomeAcceptable
All issues resolved: YesGood sign
Issues NOT resolvedUnderstand why — may be acceptable

3. When Was the Audit?

Audit DateMeaning
Within last 6 monthsRecently reviewed
6-12 months agoCode may have changed
Over 12 months agoNeeds re-audit after updates

Time Lock

A time lock delays contract changes, giving users time to withdraw.

Time Lock DurationSafety Level
48+ hoursStrong — users can exit
24-48 hoursModerate
0-24 hoursWeak
No time lockVery risky

Admin Keys

The development team may have special admin powers.

Admin PowerRisk
Can pause contractLow (protection)
Can upgrade contractMedium
Can withdraw all fundsHigh — possible rug pull
Can mint unlimited tokensHigh — unlimited dilution
No admin keysDecentralised

Liquidity Lock

Liquidity LockMeaning
Locked for 1+ yearsTeam can’t rug pull
Locked for 3-6 monthsModerate safety
No lockTeam can remove liquidity anytime (rug risk)

Check on Unicrypt or Team Finance if LP tokens are locked.

TVL (Total Value Locked)

TVLMeaning
$100M+Established protocol, lower risk per dollar
$10-100MMid-sized, reasonable
$1-10MSmall, higher risk
Under $1MVery high risk

DeFi Safety Score

Use DeFi Safety (defisafety.com) to check protocols:

ScoreMeaning
900-1000Excellent
700-900Good
500-700Moderate
Under 500Poor

Bottom Line

Never deposit into a protocol without checking: audits (and reading the report), time locks, admin key controls, and liquidity locks. If a protocol fails on any major safety check, skip it. There are enough audited, time-locked, established DeFi protocols that you don’t need to take unnecessary risks.
